Performed as part of Langley Band’s award-winning 2026 Wychavon Festival of Brass entertainment set, which received the Most Entertaining award:
Cole Porter’s 1935 big band hit, Begin the Beguine, was originally written for the Broadway musical, Jubilee. It is inspired by the beguine; a Carribean dance that blends rumba with waltz.
This arrangement is very true to legendary clarinetist, Artie Shaws 1938 cover of the jazz standard and opens with a Flugelhorn solo.
The atypical scoring calls for three Tenor Trombones. This is optional and should be played by the 1st Baritone player in conventional brass bands where possible.
The score order has been altered to reflect big band scoring i.e., the 2nd Baritone and both Euphoniums are often joined with the Tenor Horns as a quasi Saxophone section.
