Originally recorded in 1970 by the Carpenters, Merry Christmas, Darling is a bittersweet Christmas ballad. The music captures the nostalgia and warmth associated with the festive season, contrasted with feelings of longing and lonliness when apart from one’s beloved.
The lyrics were written by Frank Pooler around 1944 inspired by a teenage crush during World War II. The lyrics were later set to music by one of Pooler’s students, Richard Carpenter, in just 15 minutes. The song was an instant success and has been re-recorded by numerous artists since.
