Known for their 200+ dark and gruesome tales, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm have inspired many mediums: from literature to animation, and now this concert work for Brass Band and Percussion. Featuring gloomy soundscapes, multiple exposed soloists and imposing tutti sections, Grimm is an atmospheric introduction into the world and minds of the infamous folklorists: the Brothers Grimm. Many short, simple motifs (just like their stories) can be heard in various guises: some of the lower band can be heard warning us there's a bad wolf in the woods at bar or the sorrowful damsel's theme first introdued by flugelhorn. The piece utilises busy percussion parts, jarring syncopated rhythms and muted effects to achieve the macabre, unsettling atmosphere the Brothers Grimm often penned, from our first taste of evil all the way to the playful, yet sinister ending.
